We were approached by Joseph Joseph to look at creating a more enjoyable and simpler user experience for preparing garlic. Current utensils require a squeezing action to compress individual cloves, needing high forces from the user.
We explored the process of crushing by testing with a wide variety of products and mechanisms, evaluating them for efficiency and suitability. By observing invited guests using conventional crushers, we noticed how many would use both hands to apply the necessary force.
We transferred this insight to develop a two piece design, allowing the user to use both hands for greater power with less effort. Developing an initial proof of principle rig, we were able to calculate input forces and compare with current products to understand the user benefit and improvement.
